Recognizing both people

The official biography of the Rietveld Schröderhuis describes the house as the joint creation of Gerrit Rietveld and Truus Schröder. It presents Rietveld as a furniture maker who established himself as an architect through this building and explains that Schröder’s contribution was greater than some accounts had recognized. The profile does not reduce her to the role of client.

Working from the house

The museum documents a shared architectural office on the ground floor and other joint work, including interiors for Schröder’s sister and an apartment block on Erasmuslaan. It also cites De Stijl publications crediting both alongside images of the house. These facts support recognition of the collaboration without arbitrarily assigning each element to one person.

Schröder’s letters and the museum archive broaden the house’s story beyond its photographs. House Angle links this historical record to the project about a transformable layout. It is an authorship archive, not a current office: no services, availability or fictional contacts are published for either person.
