Ask for precise identification

Natural stone does not represent a single level of performance. Its composition and finish influence use and care. The Natural Stone Institute distinguishes calcareous and siliceous stones when explaining their response to cleaners, so knowing the actual material is useful before deciding how to maintain it.

Ask for its name, origin where available, finish and intended use. Compare several samples or images of the batch because one small piece may not represent variation in the supply. Decide which changes in pattern interest you and which you need to review with the supplier.

Design the junctions

A worktop, floor and wall lining involve different considerations. Bring the supplier a drawing showing openings, supports, edges and joints. Do not assume every piece allows the same overhang or drilling. Preparation and fabrication require professional checks, especially where cuts and loads are involved.

Care without absolute promises

The institute recommends compatible cleaning, removing particles and attending to spills. It also explains that an impregnating treatment may reduce staining risk without making the stone immune. Request the plan recommended for the specific stone and finish combination.

Avoid applying acids, abrasives or treatments by analogy with another surface. If a mark appears, record what happened and seek advice before persisting with products. Recovery may require a specialist and may not restore an identical appearance. This entry compares documentation, without stain testing or technical approval of a piece.
