Observe what ends up on the floor
For several days, note the objects that appear in the entrance: shoes, bags, post or work materials. The list describes a specific need better than an inspiration photograph. Decide what must stay by the door and what can be stored in another room. A hallway need not provide all the storage for the home.
Draw the furniture open
Measure skirting boards, projections, switches and doors. On the sketch, show the furniture's volume and the space it occupies when opened. Try the route with empty boxes or a reversible floor marking, without creating obstacles. Walk through the area carrying the bags or objects you normally transport.
Separate circulation space from surfaces for putting things down. A shelf that becomes covered in parcels can become an obstacle even if its depth seems small. The appropriate width depends on use and local conditions; this guide does not set a regulatory dimension.
Check stability
Consult the model's instructions before choosing it. IKEA notes that opening drawers or loading the upper part can encourage tipping and calls for fixings suited to the wall type. Ask for help if you do not know the substrate or its hidden services.
After reorganising, observe what starts accumulating again. Adjusting a category or moving an object may solve more than adding another unit. Keep a photograph of the clear route as a practical reference.
At a glance
Scope
Organisation and assessment of furniture placement.
Before starting
- Inventory of everyday objects.
- Hallway measurements and furniture manual.
Supporting materials
- Tape measure and sketch.
- Empty boxes or reversible marking.
Difficulty
Basic for planning; fixing depends on the substrate.
Indicative time
Observation over several days and one layout session.
Steps
- Record objects and frequency of use.
- Measure the route and all opening movements.
- Simulate the volume without obstructing circulation.
- Check stability and fixing with the supplier.
Checks
- Do doors and drawers open?
- Do switches and access panels remain accessible?
- Does the fixing suit both furniture and wall?
Maintenance
Review accumulations and the furniture's condition when its load changes.
Type of review
An editorial synthesis of documentation; no physical testing or technical review by a professional is recorded. Building decisions require on-site verification.
