Identify before scheduling

Record the plant's name and look up its needs in a reliable horticultural source. Then describe its position: indoors or outdoors, direct sun, shade, proximity to glazing and temperature changes. The RHS stresses choosing conditions according to the plant instead of placing it solely for decorative reasons.

Do not use orientation as the only criterion. A covered balcony and an open one may have different conditions even when facing the same way. Also record container size, growing medium and the presence of drainage. These details help explain why two pots do not dry at the same rate.

Observe the whole

Check the growing medium's condition in the way recommended for that species and observe the plant before adding water. A drooping appearance alone does not identify the cause: light or watering conditions may be unsuitable. Avoid responding to every change by automatically increasing the quantity.

Keep a simple observation and watering diary. Change one variable at a time where possible and compare the result; the aim is to recognise actual conditions, not meet a fixed number of litres.

Review when the location changes

If you move the pot, the season changes or a different weather event arrives, observe again. The planner organises your records but does not diagnose diseases or prescribe a universal routine. Consult a species-specific guide or a horticultural professional if deterioration persists.

At a glance

Scope

Recording and adapting care, without pest diagnosis or a universal routine.

Before starting

  • Plant identification.
  • Knowledge of the container, growing medium and drainage.

Supporting materials

  • Species guide.
  • Notebook or watering planner.

Difficulty

Basic for observation; identification may require help.

Indicative time

Repeated observations adapted to the plant and location.

Steps

  • Identify species and requirements.
  • Describe exposure, container and growing medium.
  • Record condition and watering.
  • Review when season or location changes.

Checks

  • Does the routine come from a species guide?
  • Is drainage present and is its condition known?
  • Are light and temperature considered as well as water?

Maintenance

Update records after repotting, location changes or changes in weather conditions.

Type of review

An editorial synthesis of documentation; no physical testing or technical review by a professional is recorded. Building decisions require on-site verification.
