Construction and occupation

The Rietveld Schröderhuis stands on Prins Hendriklaan, Utrecht. The museum dates its construction to 1924 and recognizes the joint creation of Gerrit Rietveld and Truus Schröder. She moved in with her three children in January 1925. The distinction separates completion of the building from the start of occupation.

A changing layout

The upper floor could remain open during the day and be divided at night by sliding walls. Schröder and Rietveld’s shared office occupied the ground floor. The museum’s biography also documents changes to the kitchen and rooms, rentals and different family stages. The property did not retain one unchanged layout throughout its occupation.

Schröder continued living and working in the house at different stages; it remained inhabited until her death in 1985. This entry records that material and domestic continuity. The related House Angle project examines adaptation as an editorial reading, without making historical mechanisms a technical recommendation or claiming that the visitable state reproduces every period of the house.
